This summer Mpiri will be part of two major projects that span many centuries in time and represent very different styles.

In 2012 Mpiri became part of a project called Nordic Cultural roads.  A project to explore how the pilgrimmage exchanged cultures almost a millenium ago. In 2012 Mpiri were in Iceland with the ensemble Via Artis Konsort. We did some workshops with local choirs and music students and we had two concerts together. This summer Via Artis Konsort and Mpiri will have two concerts in the Tórshavn, Faroe Islands during the festival Summartónar.

Also this summer Mpiri will be on tour with the reknowned danish folk/ethno band Afenginn. Afenginn is known across Europe for it’s unique sounds and rythms. Afenginn are in a project they call Choirnevale. This has led to working with TheEstonian Womens TV Choir and the danish chamber choir Cammerata. Now the time has come to explore the north atlantic tone and vibes with Mpiri. We will be performing at G! Festival on 19. july.

We are looking forward to making great music with these two ensembles this summer, and we hope to see you all at one or more of these concerts.

On the 16′th and 26′th of may, Mpiri will be holding two spring concerts were we will perform New Nordic Music. This spring Mpiri has been working closely with the reknowned danish composer Kuno Kjærbye, and we are very much looking forward to making first performances of three choral work by him.

We will also be performing new music (although not first performances) by Cyrillus Kreek, Jan Sandstrøm, Sunleif Rasmussen, Pauli í Sandagerði, Knút Olsen and other.

Mpiri preparing for 2013

2012 brought many changes to Mpiri. Evolving over time while exploring many types of form and expression. This is the path Mpiri chose to take when Mpiri was founoded 15 years ago. This means making turns, changing direction ever so often, to seek out new territories to explore.

2013 will bring new step into the unknown for Mpiri. Having parted with dear members of many years and welcoming new persons with their special voices and beings, Mpiri is ready to go chase new worlds. We will be working with musicians from a diffenrent genre parttaking in festivals in Europe. We will be doing a theatrical performance with an internationally reknowned stage company, using our voices and bodies in new and exciting ways. We are also working on one of our biggest projects ever – creating new music to faroese contemporary poetry. Engaging approximately 10 non-faroese composers in composing new music. Hopefully this will bring new winds and angles into faroese choir music.

To say it short, Mpiri is preparing for a year of many exciting project, and we are truly thrilled by the prospect of presenting all our ideas to YOU

Christmas Concerts with Rasmus Lyberth

On the 2′th and 6′th of december, Mpiri will hold a christmas concerts with our greenlandic friend, Rasmus Lyberth. The first concert will be at 16:00 in Christianskirken on Christianshavn in Copenhagen. The second concert will be in Gråbrødre Klosterkirke in Odense. That concert will begin at 19:00.

There will be danish, norwegian, swedish and ofcourse some faroese and greenlandic christmas songs. It will be a mix of traditional music and contemporary/modern compositions.

On 28. of september the faroese patient hotel – Hotel Thorshavn, opened at their new location. This was celebrated with participation of the faroese prime minister, minister of health and other politicians among many others. There were some musical performances and Mpiri was one of them.
It was a good opening reception and it is a beautiful house.

The fall season of 2012 has started, and it has brought many changes and will bring some exciting challenges.

We parted ways with our conductor through 9½ year – Gorm Larsen. Gorm has been the instigator of a fantastic progress the Mpiri has seen since 2003. His musicality and engagement in the choir and the individuals, has taken Mpiri further than we could imagine. After many years together it is sad to part ways, but it is perhaps a good time to seek new inspirations.

Mpiri has been through a process of hiring a conductor to bring Mpiri into to future in a good way. This process has been tough but also very exciting. We have been overwhelmed by the number of conductors that applied for the position, and we take great pride in that. We went through a periode of rehearsals where a number of candidates stated their case, and we are happy to have agreed terms with Erik Jakobsson. There will be more news about Erik on these pages shortly.

We have also had some change in the singers. We are happy to welcome two new male singers: Jákup Lützen and Jónas Valdimarsson.

This fall will see some concerts that will be announced when all the details are in place.

Mpiri is would like to add a 1. tenor and a 2. bass to the ensemble. If you feel that might be something for you to try, please contact us.

Other voices currently have no vacancies, however, Mpiri is always looking for the next singer to join our little ensemble, and in a small ensemble vacancies can occur with short notice, so please contact us if you would like to come in to concideration.

We are an ensemble that at times sing complex music, so good singing skills are required as well as ability to read scores. You must be able to prepare on your own.
Also being a small ensemble makes us vulnerable, so good work ethics are much appreciated.

Spring concerts in Kristkirken 20. May at 16:00

The spring of 2012 has seen three concerts by MPIRI. The fourth and last spring concert will be sunday 20. May at 16:00 in Kristkirken on Enghave Plads in Copenhagen. The theme of these concerts is sleep and dreams.

MPIRI have been exploring how composers have dealt with that time of day, when we are not awake. From lullabys to compositions dealing with the mysterious universe of sleeping. What happens when we drift off to those magical places where everything is possible? MPIRI has collected a variety of compositions ranging from early renaissance to modern day music.

Come and join MPIRI in a venture into that enchanted uncharted realm.

Mpiri is participating in the project called Nordic Cultural Paths. The project aims to explore what happens when folklore music travels the old pilgrim paths.
This project will be on Iceland 4-6th of May. Mpiri will participate in two concerts and a workshop over the weekend.
